Ways to hang a hammock:

There are basically three ways to hang a hammock:

  1. On a hammock stand specifically designed for that purpose.
  2. Between two trees, strong posts or rails, using a tree friendly hammock hanging kit.
  3. Between two trees, strong posts or rails, using very strong, large hooks.

There are less expensive stands available the resemble this one but they are not the same. If you are contemplating purchasing a stand that looks like this but costs a lot less (say $100) ask a lot of questions about how it is made before purchasing.

Hooks Screwed in the Trees

Not our favourite method as it damages the trees and eventually, no matter how strong the hooks, the hammock motion will cause the hooks to loosen and fall out. We also do not recommend using rope to hang your hammock - it will damage the trees and may break.

How to Hang Your Hammock:

No matter which method of hanging your hammock you choose there are a few basic rules to follow:

  • Hang it 4 to 4 1/2 feet of the ground. Pull it as tight as you can. The knots in your hammock are hand tied and will tighten with use, causing the hammock to stretch. If you check the hammock cam at our shop and see the staff lying in hammocks or swinging in hammock swings they are not being lazy, they are pre-tightening knots. It is a tough job somebody has to do it.Cool
  • Use chain and "S" hooks to adjust the length.
  • When the hammock is in place test your installation by very carefully sitting in the hammock. See below.

How to Get in Your Hammock:

Put your heaviest part (that would be your behind) in first and be sure you are centered. Then swing your legs in and lie back. Hold both sides of the hammock and wiggle around a bit to find the perfect spot for you, then relax and enjoy.

If a second person is going to join you it is a little more tricky. First, make sure the hammock is big enough to hold both of you – at least 54 inches wide with a weight capacity suitable for both your weights added together. Then the heaviest person should get in first and get comfortable. Then the lighter person can join him/her – bum first, Not feet first, like the guy in this video:
