 NEW: EarthFriendly Hammock

eco friendly hammock

This EarthFriendly hammock has been in development for a while and is now ready for you to enjoy.

We wanted to make it totally earth friendly and the most comfortable spot possible for you to kick back and relax, so this is what we did:

1. We make the rope used in this hammock from Repreve polyester yarn, a fiber that is manufactured from recycled plastic. For every 1 lb. of Repreve polyester yarn produced, 50,000 BTUs are conserved, the equivalent of about 2 litres of gasoline.

2. The wood for the spreader bars is FSC certified and is harvested locally at Wind Horse Farm in New Germany, Nova Scotia.

3. The spreader bar is finished with organic flax seed oil from Foxmill, an oil producer just down the road from our shop, in Indian Harbour.

 About our hammocks:

The Bay Hammock Company is a master hammock builder located in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Our hammocks are hand made by skilled artisans who are either descendants of fishermen or fishers themselves. They take their traditional knowledge of rope and net making and repair and apply it to making our hammocks.

Not only do we hand make the hammock, we make the rope. This allows us to make our hammocks with rope specifically designed for that purpose. It is a very strong rope that has just enough "give" to allow the hammock cradle your body in comfort. The rope is braided, not twisted. It is made with 8 strands of yarn braided around a center core. Small nicks and cuts in one strand will not weaken the integrity of the braid. For more information about how our hammocks are made visit our Economuseum.

We do not usually use cotton rope in our hammocks. They look nice suspended between two trees, but like their hard-working cousin, the cotton mop, they stay wet a long time and then rot. The nylon, polyester and EarthFriendly ropes we use are designed specifically to take whatever the weather throws at them and survive. They will dry out quickly after a rain, they will not fade in the sun and will have you swaying comfortably in the breeze for years to come.

Because we hand make each hammock, you can order whatever size you need to fit your location, provided that it makes sense from a design point of view. As one happy customer says:

Hi Archie,
The hammock looks very professional and we are very proud of it. My twin  and her family came up from
Maryland for a late Fathers' Day and  fortunately the hammock arrived today. We are all very excited and you  delivered the product way before it was expected to arrive. Down here, if you want a 3-point rope hammock you must get it in cotton. Our original one was totally destroyed by the mice we have in Massachusetts making their homes from the soft material.

Stumble It!
